Department of Mathematics

The Mathematics Learning Area serves as a demonstration unit for secondary school mathematics education management. It also functions as a center for teaching internship, educational research, and professional training for teacher interns from the Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University, before they graduate and enter the teaching profession. Currently, the department consists of 18 faculty members overseeing its various operations.

History

Chulalongkorn University Demonstration School was established on June 20, 1958. In its early years, the school was not yet divided into primary and secondary divisions, and subjects were grouped into general academic tracks. These faculty members moved to other positions or departments before the 1967 academic year, when the school officially split into Primary and Secondary Divisions. Following the split, additional mathematics faculty members joined.

During this period, Mathematics instruction was organized based on students' Ability Groups. In the 1972 academic year, the school introduced a "High-Performance Class" for each grade level, using English and Mathematics scores as the primary criteria for placement.

In 1979, the department was officially renamed the "Mathematics Department," Since then, the Head of Department has been elected for a two-year term. To align with the National Basic Education Curriculum, the department’s name was changed to the "Mathematics Learning Area" in the first semester of the 2007 academic year.
